Celebrate Pride Month! In 1972 - 3 years after the Stonewall Riots - Dallas' LGBTQI+ citizens gathered in a crowd of about 300 to march through Downtown in an act that set up the foundation for more than 40 years of progress for the Metroplex's queer community. In 2018, Dallas was the first Texas city to get state recognition for its LGBTQ+ community when the Texas Historical Commission recognized the history of the Oak Lawn neighborhood as a place of community gathering. Today, Oak Lawn is known as one of the friendliest LBGTQI+ neighborhoods in the country, and the Historical Commission's plaque proudly sits at the corner of Cedar Springs and Throckmorton.
